SECTION V - HEALTH HAZARD DATA
PRIMARY ROUTE(S) OF ENTRY: Inhalation, skin
HEALTH HAZARDS (ACUTE AND CHRONIC)
INHALATION:
Acute: Upper respiratory tract (nose and throat) irritation. May cause nausea or dizziness. Chronic: There are no studies to indicate that asphalt causes cancer or respiratory damage in man. This petroleum based product contains a small amount of polyaromatic hydrocarbons which have been shown to cause cancer and respiratory damage in laboratory animals.
SKIN CONTACT:
Acute: Prolonged or repeated contact with cold material may cause dermatitis. Contact with hot material will cause thermal burns. Exposure to asphalt fumes increases sensitivity to sunburn. Chronic: Mouse skin painting studies give evidence of skin cancer.
EYE CONTACT:
Acute: Fumes from heated material will cause irritation. Chronic: None known.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF EXPOSURE:
Upper respiratory tract, eye and skin irritation.
MEDICIAL CONDITIONS GENERALLY AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE:
None known.

SECTION VI - EMERGENCY & FIRST-AID PROCEDURES
INHALATION:
Remove individual to fresh air. If irritation persists, administer oxygen and seek medical attention.
SKIN:
Cool hot material with ice or cold water. DO NOT REMOVE ASPHALT IMMEDIATELY. Cover with petroleum jelly and remove when softened. Seek medical attention.
EYES:
Flush with running water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention
INGESTION:
Do not induce vomiting. In general, no treatment is necessary unless large quantities of product are ingested. However, get medical advice.
SECTION VII - SPECIAL HANDLING INFORMATIONVENTILATION:
Ambient
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION:
If fumes exceed 5 Mg/M3 use an approved organic vapor respirator with a particulate prefilter.
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING:
Long sleeved shirt and long pants. Gloves should be used where there could be direct contact.
EYE PROTECTION:
Safety glasses or face shield when material is in liquid form.
WORK/HYGIENIC PRACTICES:
In outdoor applications where material is heated, keep kettle downwind of workers.
SECTION VIII - SPILL, LEAK & DISPOSAL PROCEDURES
ACTION TO TAKE FOR SPILLS (USE APPROPRIATE SAFETY EQUIPMENT):
Dike storage tanks to prevent material from entering sewers or waterways. Use appropriate containment (booms, etc.) to prevent dispersion when a spill is out of diked area or has reached a waterway.
WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD:
Dispose in accordance with federal, state and local regulations. Primary disposal is in a municipal or industrial landfill.
EPA HAZARDOUS WASTE NUMBER: NA
This material is not regulated under the "RCRA" hazardous waste regulations.
SECTION IX - SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING AND STORAGE: 86
Avoid allowing hot, molten asphalt to contact water.
